Every family signs, or applies a thumbprint to, a detailed agreement that is read or explained to them in full.

Al-Maniha entrusts sheep, goats and cattle to vetted families in Butere as an Amanah. Half of every eligible offspring is handed on to the next family, so a single donation keeps giving, household after household.
Al-Maniha Livestock Empowerment Initiative (ALIVE Kenya) is a community-based organisation in Butere, Kakamega County. We give families a productive asset rather than a one-off handout: livestock that feeds a household, builds savings and breeds. Each animal is held as an Amanah, a trust. The family cares for it, keeps part of what it produces and passes the rest on. The original donation reaches one household, then another, then another.
Why “Al-Maniha”
In Arabic, a maniha is a milk-giving animal given so that a family may live from it. The Prophet ﷺ praised it as one of the finest forms of charity.
«نِعْمَ المَنِيحَةُ اللِّقْحَةُ الصَّفِيُّ مِنْحَةً، وَالشَّاةُ الصَّفِيُّ تَغْدُو بِإِنَاءٍ وَتَرُوحُ بِآخَرَ»
“How excellent a maniha is a she-camel or a sheep rich in milk: it gives a vessel of milk in the morning and another in the evening.”
Every step is governed by a written agreement and recorded in our Livestock Register.

You sponsor a livestock unit: five sheep or goats, or one cow.

A vetted household signs the Beneficiary Livestock Empowerment Agreement. Each animal is tagged and entered into the register at handover.

The family feeds, shelters and breeds the animals. Our officers visit to check health, births and welfare.

Half of the eligible offspring, once weaned and fit, is handed over to start the next family’s herd.
And the cycle begins again
The offspring are shared by clear rules that every family agrees to before receiving animals.

Half stay with the family as their own asset. Half go on, after weaning, to establish a new household’s herd.
Shared equally between the family and the donor. One male sheep from the donor’s share is set aside for Udhiyah on Eid al-Adha when it meets the Shariah requirements.
Sold, with the net proceeds recorded and used only to fund supervision, monitoring and running the programme.
No animal is moved while it is sick, injured, underweight or unweaned. The handover waits until it is fit.

Every family signs, or applies a thumbprint to, a detailed agreement that is read or explained to them in full.
Each animal is identified at handover and entered into the Livestock Register with its condition.
Our officers check health, feeding, shelter and births, and follow up on any concern.
Every birth, death and transfer is logged, so each revolving contribution can be traced.
Records are kept for donor reporting and can be reviewed by authorised auditors.
Family information is used only to run the programme and is safeguarded against misuse.
